Ingen Frygt (No Fear)

Ingen Frygt (No Fear) know no limits. The members of this artist’s group explore visual clichés and postulates, confronting them with our everyday lives. No material, no media is strange to them: Sculpture, photography, video, installation art, happenings – whatever their choice, they stage it in ways that is both confessional and general in scope. The louche lightness of laughter permeates their work.
The artist’s group consists of three Icelandic women who have settled in Copenhagen. Taking their new home as their point of departure, they bring themselves into play within imagery that strikes us as familiar, but which the artists combine in new, odd, subtly strange ways, offering up new angles on issues such as gender, sexuality, rituals, and existence.

The group have characterised their work as “schizophrenic expressionism” – but one might also call it ”earnest” or “passionate exhibitionism”. For one of the boundaries transgressed by Ingen Frygt is the boundary which encircles the private space. Sometimes it is a taboo little-girl world. At other times, the body is put on display in strange forms and incarnations. In yet other pieces, the group create happenings where the three members stage provocative interventions in public spaces. Humour is one of the crucial weapons used when Ingens Frygt break boundaries with their activities.

At the same time, Ingen Frygt is a highly idealistic group. Their target is to expose and transform all the ugliness which surround us, in the form of “cultural garbage and clichés”, into beauty. The group look to non-Western cultures for aid, to incantations and phenomena which appear alien and familiar at the same time, as for example in Voodoo Child (2005). This is because Ingen Frygt often hit a nerve embedded deep in our identity, in a place where the varnish of pop culture has been scraped away. They address subjects such as money, sexuality, shame, and guilt; stereotypical female gender roles are often brought into play, and they pull no punches.
Ingen Frygt elaborate on the point with this statement: ”We want to create and change spaces, thereby invoking a change, causing a shift in preconceptions. We work a great deal with politics of feelings – in that way, our project is sociological in nature, but it is often about how power manifests itself at a personal, individual level.”

The un-flipped side of the coin of corniness is a sharply honed political discourse which Ingen Frygt make ever more overt. One example is the project carried out in support of the politician Asmaa Abdol-Hamid, specifically in the form of an appreciation website with features including a rap video entitled ”Vilde muslimer” (“Wild Moslems”, a pun on a Danish 80s hit entitled “Wild Rabbits”), a quiz, and a petition. The website bears the provocative title www.givdengasmaa.dk (a pun on Abdol-Hamid’s first name, literally “steponitasmaa”) and serves as a comment on what Ingen Frygt perceives as a witch hunt against the female politician. It has been said of Ingen Frygt: ”Viewers are admitted to a disturbing world which plays hide-and-seek with our expectations of the art space.” The question is whether only Ingen Frygt knows no limits? Or is the same required of audiences? Boundaries are there to be transgressed.
